The reception at HMP Wolds |
HMP Wolds is a Category 'C' training prison for adult males managed
by GSL under contract to the Home Office.
The prison is situated 16 miles West of the City of Kingston Upon
Hull and close to the M62 motorway. HMP Wolds stands between the villages
of North Cave and South Cave and lays directly beside HMP Everthorpe.
HMP Wolds is a training prison holding 350 sentenced adult (over 21
years old) male prisoners. Prisoners must have a minimum of 6 months
to serve in a category C. |
Its philosophy seeks to "normalise"
prison life to reflect life in the outside community as far as possible
and to create an environment in which both staff and prisoners feel
safe and causes of prison stress are minimised. Central to this
philosophy is the relationship between staff and prisoners. GSL's operating philosophy emphasises the need to treat prisoners
with decency and respect and encourages staff to build positive,
supportive relationships with the prisoners in their care. GSL also aims to create a constructive prison regime through
the provision of education, work and other programmes in order to
best prepare people for re-integration into mainstream society.
Regime
Prisoners at HMP Wolds spend 12 hours per day out of their cell
engaged in a range of purposeful activities including: education,
training, workshops and sports facilities. A range of specialist
programmes are designed to prepare prisoners for their planned release
back into the community so the probability of re-offending is minimised.
GSL has a single union agreement with GMB Union commercial service
section which commits both parties to binding arbitration.
GSL is an equal opportunities employer and
makes every effort to recruit from ethnic minority communities.
The Independent Monitoring Board report
published in April 2002 said:
"Once again we are happy to report that the prison
has had a successful year with very little for the Board to criticise.
The prison remains calm and the staff/prisoner relationship is excellent."
"For the third year running there has been a significant
reduction in the number of positive drug tests. The staffs, particularly
in the visits area, are to be applauded for their vigilance."
