Independent Monitoring Board
At HMP Wolds there are 11 members on the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB).
The BOV are volunteers, appointed by the Home Secretary, to keep an
independent eye on the state of the establishment, especially the
treatment of prisoners. Every prison has a Board and on average there
are up to 15 members on a BOV. |
An essential part of the Board's role is to visit HMP Wolds on a rota
basis, at different times of the day and night, often unannounced.
The Board has access to every area of the prison and members listen
to prisoners' comments and where necessary ensure appropriate action
is taken, sometimes taking their concerns to the Director of the prison
or Home Secretary.
Prisoners can feel confident that speaking to members of the board
is in the strictest confidence. This is an extremely important area
of the Board's work.
Each Board member has an area of the establishment to focus upon.
Reports of their visits are written up and are discussed at a monthly
meeting with the Director.
A member of the Board is in the prison on most days and the Board
is always happy to be of assistance to both prisoners and staff.
