Charter Mark
This is a Government award for the excellent delivery of public sector services. HMP Wolds received the award in February 2001. The award covers every aspect of work at the prison and clearly demonstrates the commitment to high quality, measurable standards of service. Charter Mark website

The former Home Secretary, Rt Hon Jack Straw MP, writing to the Director of the prison regarding the award of the Charter Mark said:
"May I congratulate you and all those involved on your success. I know that it will have involved a great deal of hard work and commitment."

National Training Award

In December 1995 HMP Wolds won a Regional Award as part of the National Training Awards Corporate Achievement. Awarded by the Yorkshire and Humberside judging panel, the award recognised the excellence of staff retraining within the prison. As part of the change from being solely a remand institution to being a prison, the management launched a training initiative to equip the existing staff to deal with a more demanding regime without causing negative prisoner reaction. The programme consisted of peer group training by operational staff, initially providing "trainer training" to existing staff while they remained in operational roles. Employees from different functions within the prison were then combined into small trainee groups of 12. Each group attended a five-day course which included both didactic and role-play material. A total of 220 people were trained in just 24 weeks.

National Safety Award

In May 2001 HMP Wolds achieved a prestigious award from the British Safety Council. This was an independent evaluation of HMP Wold's Health & Safety management system, which is of paramount importance. The auditing process is based on best practice; it reviews current Health & Safety management but also checks on the effectiveness within the workplace.

Sir Neville Purvis, KCB, Director General of the British Safety Council says:

"The National Safety Awards highlight organisations that reach the top levels of health and safety. They are a mark of a proven and significant achievement in safety standards."

Arts and Business partnership Award
The arts and Business Award is a particularly prestigious honour, ranked with some of the most established business partnerships within the arts in this country. It is awarded to businesses for their sponsorship of arts projects. GSL won the award, which was presented at a reception in the Victoria and Albert Museum, for sponsorship of Summit Arts, who worked with the prisoners in HMP Wolds to write and produce stage musicals.

Butler Trust Award
HMP Wolds has had three award winners from nominations that have been made by both prisoners and staff. Two of the awards were for outstanding work that enabled prisoners to produce both written and performance work of high artistic value.

The outstanding success in the use of the arts allows prisoners to acquire skills in teamwork, commitment, respect for each other, and raising self esteem and status. These all help with the rehabilitation process.

The third award was for the successful implementation of a parenting and family-learning programme. The programme, which is undertaken for 10 weeks, aims at building strong family links during a prisoner's sentence and includes extended family visits. Prisoners can aim for qualifications in social, life and key skills. Prisoner's partners can also complete the course through correspondence.

HRH The Princess Royal has been patron of the Butler Trust since its foundation.
