Information technology is one of
the many skills taught in the prison
|
In the main department, there are five classrooms, consisting of pottery,
computers, Art & Design and two traditional classrooms.
The prisoners can do 46 courses ranging from Oxford, Cambridge and
RSA Examinations (OCR), Associated Examining Board (AEB), Pitman,
General Certificate Of Secondary Education (GCSE, A Levels, Open College
and Open University, as well as courses that look at offences like
drug and alcohol abuse.
Prisoners have access to learning resources held in the Education
Department, as well as the prison library, which, if necessary, can
arrange the loan of books.
There is a team of full-time and part-time staff headed by the Education
Manager. The Education Department operates from Monday to Friday,
with additional provision of evening classes. |
Summer School
HMP Wolds College has held a summer school at which external
speakers have been invited to give demonstrations and talks. A regular
attraction has been the birds of prey brought into the prison with
students being shown how to handle the various birds. Photographs
were taken of prisoners with the birds and sold with the proceeds
going to charity.
The College
This is a residential living and employment unit whereby prisoners
study full-time. There is independent study, one-to-one, group tutorials,
open/flexi learning etc.

Art and Craft
Qualifications in this area are to include
key skills; the study route follows the same format as the Education
Department.
Basic Skills
With specialist teachers, we provide foundation
work for non-readers / writers and ESOL prisoners. The results obtained
allowed prisoners to progress to higher achievements through a structured
progression route. |
Pottery
Our studio potter has raised both the awareness and standard of ceramic
work to such an extent that we now regularly exhibit at galleries
throughout the North of England. HMP Wolds is regarded as a centre
of excellence in this field, particularly by the Koestler judges,
with key skills, GCSE and A level results reinforcing this view.
Family Learning
Initiated at HMP Wolds, the family learning project achieved a Butler
Trust Award and has gone from strength to strength. A national conference
arranged by Anne Smith and delivered by HMP Wolds and Holme House was
well received with a CD produced to demonstrate the pioneering work
of both prisons in this field.
Life and Social Skills
We have piloted the course
at HMP Wolds where we continue to run all but one of the available
modules to level 2. Where a module overlaps the resettlement programme,
the education department provides course input and moderates the completed
units. |
